Questions agents ask
- Which poverty guidelines are used for 2027 ACA coverage?
- The 2026 HHS poverty guidelines. HealthCare.gov uses the previous year’s numbers to calculate Marketplace savings for the next year, so 2027 coverage uses 2026 figures: $15,960 for one person plus $5,680 for each additional person in the 48 states and DC.
- What percent of the poverty line qualifies for ACA subsidies?
- Households from 100% to 400% of the federal poverty line qualify for the premium tax credit. The enhanced subsidies that removed the 400% limit covered tax years 2021 through 2025.
- What happens above 400% of the poverty line?
- The household generally does not qualify for the premium tax credit, and for tax years after 2025 any advance credits must be repaid in full, with no repayment cap.
- Who qualifies for cost-sharing reductions?
- Households from 100% to 250% of the poverty line can get a Silver plan with a lower deductible and out-of-pocket maximum.
- Are Alaska and Hawaii different?
- Yes. HHS publishes higher poverty guidelines for Alaska and Hawaii. Pick the state in the calculator.
