Questions agents ask

How long is a Special Enrollment Period?
Generally 60 days from the qualifying event. After losing Medicaid or CHIP, it is 90 days. For a loss of coverage, clients can also pick a plan up to 60 days before the coverage ends.
When does coverage start after a Special Enrollment Period?
For many events, the first day of the month after the plan is picked. If a plan is picked before other coverage ends, the first of the month after it ends. For birth, adoption or foster placement, coverage can start the day of the event.
Does getting married or moving always qualify?
Generally only if the client had qualifying coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the marriage or move, with some exceptions such as moving from another country.
Do state-based exchanges use the same rules?
Not always. These rules are for HealthCare.gov states. States that run their own exchange can use different windows.
